                          Scientific Peer Review Groups (SRGs)

SRGs are the generic, functional term for any group engaged in scientific and technical peer review.  SRGs are divided into two categories: Initial/Integrated Review Groups and Special Emphasis Panels.

                          Initial/Integrated Review Groups (IRGs)

IRGs perform the first level of scientific and technical peer review of grant applications, cooperative agreements, and contract proposals.  In the Center for Scientific Review, these groups are known as Integrated Review Groups, and the NIH Institutes refer to them as Initial Review Groups. IRGs are composed of study sections which are groups of scientists focused on a particular research field who are charged with reviewing applications. Individual study sections can be found on the NIH Scientific Review Group Index here, which includes the name of the Scientific Review Officer for each study section and meeting schedules.
